So it seems I can't seem to get in a routine of updating our blog. Maybe once I actually do I'll be able to tell friends and family about it so that they can keep up with us. But I refuse to publicize something I'm not very good at doing yet.
Married life is just incredible. Having my best friend around whenever I come home is so comforting and I still just feel like saying "ahh, finally!" every time I walk in. The true feminine nature is coming out in me at home because nesting seems to be all I do these days. It's hard to create a space you love and reflects who you are, though, without a lot of money. So I'm learning how to be even thriftier than I usually am and take advantage of things like Craigslist Free Stuff (my new addiction!).
We did, however, just make a GREAT purchase on a substantial piece of furniture that I'm pretty pumped about. Let me explain.
In our kitchen, we have cabinets on one side and our refrigerator, washer, and dryer, on the other. However, because we lucked out with a stacked washer/dryer, we had a huge extra space behind the door (when it's open) to use for extra storage. I knew that I didn't want to put some random piece of furniture there because it truly had so much potential to hold a pretty hefty item (it's enough room for a washer or dryer, after all). So I've been on the passive hunt for some sort of china hutch or cabinet unit to put there to add counter space and give a little extra cabinet space as well.
So here's where my new addiction helped us out! I keep Craigslist up in a window all day at work, just as a mindless break when I need one for a minute or two (never more, because you'll get sucked in faster than an elephant in quicksand). Besides just looking at free stuff, I have been browsing the furniture hoping to find a good deal on this particular item I wanted to get.
Finally last week I ran across and old post from a woman trying to sell her china hutch! She was asking $100 which I thought was pretty good, even though the hutch was clearly kind of cheap. Logan insisted that I barter with her (COMPLETELY out of my comfort zone!) but I obliged and we got it for $60! Logan and his dad picked it up last weekend, so I got to settle into it on Saturday.

Let me just say. That thing is cheaper than the cheapest piece of furniture I've ever seen. But you know, it serves the purpose and it really doesn't look as cheap as it really is, so I'm pretty satisfied. The back of the cabinet was covered with that nasty cardboard laminate stuff that imitates wood but really does a poor job of it, so as I was trying to make it actually cover the whole back (There were holes! It was awful!), I had a brilliant idea! I thought why not just cover it with fabric to add a little color and mix it up?
Jackpot.

I had an old table cloth from my apartment at Lipscomb that I crafted too much on (oops!) and got paint all over, so I salvaged the good parts and used them to back the new cabinet. It's a yellow paisley fabric so it's soft but still adds a pop in our yellow kitchen! I just love it. And then I proceeded to organize the entire thing, complete with potted shamrocks and a home for my Kitchenaid Stand Mixer. It's just wonderful!

Sometimes I think about how meaningless the things I find joy in are, but there must be a reason why God gave me such a passion and appreciation for stuff like a cheap china hutch. There just has to be! So I'm trying to sift through my passions and discern what is pishposh and what I can truly use as a gift for others and maybe even a job someday (wishful thinking). Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the pictures of the hutch and hopefully more crafty nesting posts to come - I'm working on a new chalkboard and AWESOME storage for our dishes so I'll try really hard to keep you (whoever you are) updated!
Much love from the Hartline wife,
Jilly.
